In February of 2000, two art students disappeared in the woods near Meredith College while finishing their design project…
A month later, their project was found.
The Alphabet Book Project
Even though this was a student project, it remains one of my favorites. The creativity, conceptualization, collaboration, photography, and letterforms were so much fun! At the time, I learned more about myself as a budding designer and completing a project that has multiple parts from concept to completion.

Explore everyday objects and natural elements to discover hidden alphabet letters, capturing them with your camera. Select a unifying theme for your collection, such as furniture or plants. Then, craft a visually engaging book that pairs each photo with its corresponding letterform, showcasing the beauty of letters found in unexpected places.
Recreating The Blair Witch Scene
The Alphabet Book Project begins with a nod to The Blair Witch Project's opening lines.
To bring the concept to life, we decided to replicate the chilling scene from the film where a character's body part is discovered wrapped in shreds of his flannel shirt and bound by sticks. Mimicking this terrifying moment, The Alphabet Book is wrapped in fabric resembling the character's shirt and nestled within a bundle of sticks, evoking a sense of suspense and horror.
I created a bundle of sticks that would house the book.

The Alphabet Book is unveiled, showcasing a stick figure cover, which is a recurring motif from the movie. The book is constructed of black mat board and twine.
The interior spreads of the book feature corroded typography and inverted images, adding to the unsettling theme.
Just for fun, I decided to recreate the moment in the movie when the bundle of sticks was spotted and unwrapped. A quick note: there is no sound with this video and there's nothing gory.
While we were in the woods shooting the photography for this project, we found a house that coincides with the ending of the film. We used this image on the last page of the book.
My classmate and I decided to find letterforms in nature. We themed our project after the iconic horror movie, "The Blair Witch Project," and named our project, "The Alphabet Book Project."
