The Grove

The Grove Museum Exhibit

Develop a museum exhibit for The Grove, the historic governor's mansion in Tallahassee, Florida, encompassing three floors. Design considerations should adhere to preservation requirements, as designs cannot be affixed to the walls, ceiling, or floor due to the historic nature of the house.

Objective

inspiration

Following a client meeting, I captured images of the house and its surroundings, drawing inspiration for the entire project. These photos served as a guiding influence in crafting both the brand identity and the design for the exhibit.

panel design

The exhibit has a total of 37 printed panels for the entire house. Each area in the house tells a story from a specific era, which is distinguished by the use of color.

branding

Inspired by The Grove's historical and natural setting, the brand was designed to embody an elegant simplicity, seamlessly merging modernity with timeless elements.

digital interactives

I designed 12 digital touchscreens for the exhibit, which included panel stations, audio stations, a wall station, and a touch table. My focus was on ensuring a user-friendly flow and optimizing simplicity.

This project remains a personal favorite due to its variety of design elements—spanning print, digital interactive touch displays, iconography, brand building, photo editing, case labels, and more. In hindsight, I see areas for enhancement. Specifically, I would have advocated for more extensive lighting improvements in the darker areas of the house. Also, as a current UX Designer, I would revisit the digital touchscreens and improve legibility through bolder fonts. Additionally, dedicating more time to post-installation documentation, including thorough photography and videography, could have further enriched the project's archival record.

Panel Installation

Custom millwork was designed by Squarepoint Design to match the baseboard and casing in the house. The panels I designed were attached to these millwork structures. I assisted with installation.

Touch Table Demonstration

Interactive Touch Table

The touch table was designed to look like Ellen Call Long’s desk. The items on her desk tell her story.
